White Fillings

Traditionally metal fillings have been used to fill cavities in teeth. However these fillings are not aesthetically pleasing, and in some situations these fillings weaken teeth due to the large amount of the original tooth that has to be removed in order to place them. With advances in modern dentistry we have another alternative, tooth coloured fillings, which are as strong, safe and give a more natural appearance.

There are 2 types of white fillings available:
Composite direct restoration Composite direct restoration - A composite filling is a tooth-colored plastic and glass mixture used to restore decayed teeth. Composite fillings tend to be used as an alternative to metal or silver amalgam fillings. Not only are they more aesthetically pleasing, they are are environmentally non-toxic because they use no mercury.
Porcelain Filling Porcelain restoration -  Unlike the composite filling, these are made of porcelain not plastic and are stronger and last longer in the mouth. These fillings are usually placed in back teeth when esthetics is of utmost concern in order to increase their strength and longevity they are fabricated in the laboratory and then bonded into position at the dentists.
At dental excellence we will discuss with you which restoration will best suit your teeth. Click here to book a consultation to replace any existing metal fillings you may have.

Tooth Grinding

Most people grind and clench their teeth from time to time. The two main causes of teeth grinding/clenching is created by stress and anxiety, the second is due to an abnormal bite or missing and crooked teeth.

Occasional teeth grinding, also known as bruxism, does not usually cause harm, but when teeth grinding occurs on a regular basis the teeth can be damaged and other oral health complications can arise.

The majority of grinding often occurs during sleep, and for this reason many people are unaware that they grind their teeth. Symptoms such as a dull, constant headache, a sore jaw and/or sensitive teeth are an indicator of bruxism. Many times people learn that they grind their teeth by their loved one who hears them grinding at night.
In some cases, chronic teeth grinding can result in a fracturing, loosening, or loss of teeth. Chronic grinding will not only wear the tops of the teeth but also the sides of the teeth at the gum line resulting in very sensitive teeth.
Not only can severe grinding or clenching damage teeth, it can also affect your jaws, resulting in jaw/joint pain (TMJ), clicking of your jaw joint, and difficulty in opening your mouth.

If you suspect you may be grinding your teeth, book an appointment with us. We will examine your mouth and jaw for signs of tooth grinding/clenching, and recommend individualized treatment options to help you stop grinding and protect your teeth and joint from any further damage.

What Can I Do to Stop Grinding My Teeth?

Mouth GuardOur most common method for treating tooth grinding and clenching is the fabrication of a grinding splint. This is a custom made mouth guard that commonly fits over your top teeth which is mainly worn when you sleep.

If stress is causing you to grind your teeth, we can discuss options to reduce your stress.

Other tips to help you stop teeth grinding include:

If you are experiencing a clicking, popping or crackling sound  when opening and closing your mouth, please call us on (08) 9443 8333 to make an appointment. This may be a sign that you are suffering from TMJ disfunction.

TMJ disfunction is a disharmony between the way the jaw joint works when opening and closing your mouth. Other symptoms may include frequent headaches, neck aches, tooth sensitivity, sinuses, ringing in the ear, grinding your teeth and/ or pain in your jaw muscles.

The most extreme form of TMJ dysfunction involves an arthritic condition of the jaw joint. If that is the case, you will receive comprehensive, information and treatment, because in some cases if left untreated, it can adversely affect the teeth, gums and bone structure of your mouth.

We can assist and will recommend different treatments for you. Your treatment for TMJ may vary from Physical therapy, muscle relaxants, heat and ice therapy, medications or the fabrication of a custom appliance (occlusal splint)which you wear in the mouth to help when sleeping.

Wisdom Teeth

Problems with your wisdom teeth can be dormant for a long period of time; these may or may not be noticeable. Impacted wisdom teeth may cause you problems or pain, especially if they are run down or if you are stressed.

Pain with wisdom teeth can lead to infection. Wisdom Tooth Infection symptoms include:

If you have any of these symptoms, we suggest you contact our staff for an appointment.

Root Canal

Root canal treatment often conjures up a frightening picture in your mind, of pain, sharp instruments and multiple visits to the dentist.

However, with recent advances in dentistry, root canal treatment has become not only painless, but also requires minimum appointments.

Root canal treatment is required when a tooth is infected on the inside. This procedure also known as endodontic treatment needs to be performed promptly to save the tooth.

Why would I need a Root Canal?

Diseased tooth pulp (inside of the tooth) can cause inflammation or infection.

Symptoms include:

Root Canal Procedure

Our experienced Dentists will ensure every possible step is taken to make you feel relaxed and comfortable throughout the procedure.

The Dentist will clean and disinfect the part of the tooth with the dying nerve and infection, lay and re-seal it so that there is no further complication. A local anesthetic is used to ensure you are comfortable.

Unfortunately in some cases a tooth or teeth may need to be removed. At dental excellence we can provide dental extractions, although in some cases removal of a tooth or teeth may be difficult. In this situation an appointment will be organized for you to see the appropriate specialist.

Mouth Guards

A mouth guard helps absorb the shock experienced by a blow to the face, which might otherwise result in an injury to the mouth or jaw.  A heavy collision can result in chipped or broken teeth, internal damage to a tooth, tooth loss, injuries to the soft tissue of the mouth, and, in severe cases, concussion or a broken jaw.

Injuries like these can lead to long and potentially expensive treatment to restore teeth and the mouth back to normal function and appearance.

At dental excellence we recommend and provide a variety of different mouth guards for all ages and types of type of sport being played. Your can also choose any colour , combination of colour or design that you wish. If you require a mouth guard click here to make an appointment or call us on (08) 9443 8333.

All parents want their child's first visit to the Dentist to be a fun experience.Child at the Dentist

At Dental Excellence, we'll make sure their first visit to the Dentist is a GREAT one!

We recommend bringing children for their first Dental appointment at 3-years of age. This gives them the chance to get used to the idea of meeting the Dentist, going for a ride in the chair, and opening wide (like a tiger!) - all well before any treatment is performed.

We make it fun for them, too, by incorporating a variety of instructional toys and games. They'll be having such a good time, they won't even realise that they are learning how to look after their teeth and gums.

All Kids receive a small gift token, such as a sticker, toothbrush and tooth paste. We can advise parents on your child's development, and answer any questions you may have - usually it's just a matter of reassurance.

To book your child for a check-up, please call Dental Excellence on (08) 9443 8333 and quote Childs’ Check-up.

Why should my child have fissure sealants?

One of the most important preventive treatments your child could need are fissure sealants. These are a protective, plastic coating that fills the fissures or grooves in the biting surface of teeth, to prevent the invasion of bacteria that causes tooth decay. These can help protect your child’s teeth for life from fillings.
