What can I do about my receding gums?

Many patients ask our Perth Dentists what can be done to remedy receding gums.

First though, patients need to understand what Gum recession is and what can cause gums to recede.

What is gum recession?

Gum recession is a term used to describe the exposure of roots of the teeth when the gums recess.

Causes of Gum Recession:

Here are some of the most common causes:

1.       Overly aggressive brushing or flossing. Yes it is possible to care a little too much about your oral health! Overbrushing or flossing can wear away the gums. So remember: Brush don’t SCRUB!! As a general rule, daily oral hygiene should not be painful!

2.       Poor oral health. Just as over-brushing can cause recession, so does not brushing or flossing enough! Gum recession may be a result of periodontal disease.

3.       You may be at higher risk due to genetics. If one or both parents have gum recession then you may be at higher risk of developing this.

4.       You may be grinding your teeth. Do you wake up with headaches or does the person sleeping next to you complain of hearing teeth-grinding noises while you sleep

There may be another cause to your gum recession not listed above but whatever the cause, rest assured there is treatment!

The most important thing is that you catch the problem in its early stages and seek treatment. Your dentist may recommend that you see a gum or periodontal specialist, you may need several deep tooth cleans or you may simply require oral health instruction on how to brush and floss correctly along with a new tooth brush! In some cases of severe recession, gum-graft surgery may be recommended to improve the aesthetic appearance of your smile.

No matter the cause or solution, the best thing is to contact Dental Excellence today to book in your consult and address the problem quickly!
