Fissure Sealants – Not just for kids! Why you may benefit…

Many of us associate fissure sealants with dental treatment that is only done on children. However even as an adult your dentist may recommend fissure sealants. But what are fissure sealants? Why may they be recommended to adults as well as children?

What are fissure sealants?

Fissure sealants, also sometimes referred to as dental or pit sealants, are a dental treatment intended to prevent tooth decay. The back teeth have fissures or grooves and some front teeth have pits. It is these pits and fissures which are most vulnerable to tooth decay, partly because food sticks in them and if the grooves or pits are particularly deep then they are hard to clean areas. Fissure sealants are materials placed in these pits and fissures to fill them in, creating a smooth surface that is easy to clean. No-one can see these sealants as they are clear or tooth-coloured so you don’t need to worry about them being visible. Fissure sealants are NOT fillings, so you don’t need to worry if they are recommended and you have never had a filling before. Fissure sealants are intended to keep your mouth filling-free.

Why may fissure sealants be recommended to adults as well as children?

While dental sealants are mainly used in children who are at higher risk of tooth decay and typically placed as soon as the adult molar teeth come through, some adults may also benefit from sealants being placed to prevent any future decay. Some adults should have had fissure sealants placed as children but due to their location or lack of availability of dental treatment this may not have been done. At Dental Excellence we aim to keep our patients decay-free so this method is a relatively cheap preventative treatment that you should definitely take advantage of if it is recommended to you!
